Miss Earth 2012 in Vietnam

Miss Earth 2012 is scheduled to be held in Phan Rang city, Ninh Thuan province in December 2012 at the San Ho (Coral) Theater which is due to be completed in August.

Nguyen Cong Khe, Chairman of the Youth Media Group, the co-organizer of the Miss Earth 2012, said that Ninh Thuan authorities have permitted the group to invest in the $10 million theater. This is a multi-purpose work covering 4 hectares, located in the Thap Cham coastal park of Phan Rang city.

The theater can contain up to 2,000 people. It looks like an oyster or a wave. The theater will have a complex of entertainment works, restaurants, shopping malls, etc.

According to the investor, the investment capital will be between $10-15 million. The theater will host large events, such as Charming Vietnam, Miss Vietnam or the International U21 Football Tournament, etc.

Over 90 women are expected to participate the 12th edition of the pageant.

Miss Earth 2011 is Ecuador

23-year old Olga Alava from Ecuador was crowned Miss Earth 2011 in an event held at the UP Theater in Manila, Philippines.

Miss Earth - Air 2011 went to Miss Brazil (Driely Bennettone), Miss Earth - Water 2011 was Miss Philippines (Athena Imperial) and Miss Earth - Fire 2011 was Miss Venezuela (Caroline Medina).

Completing the top 8 were contestants from Mexico, Crimea, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Zimbabwe.

Top 16 were beauties from Chinese Taipei, Sweden, Paraguay, Thailand, Portugal, Japan, Ukraine and Slovenia.

Special awards: Miss Photogenic went to Miss Chinese Taipei (voted by the fans through Miss Earth website and official FB page), Miss Friendship went to Miss Pakistan, Best in National Costume went to Miss Japan, Best in Swimsuit was awarded to Miss Czech Republic and Best in Evening Gown was given to Miss Mexico.

Miss Australia - Earth 2011

20-year old Deedee Zibara bested 18 delegates from all over Australia to win Miss Earth Australia 2011 on Friday night. She stands 178 cm tall and hails from West Ryde, New South Wales.

Deedee will be Australia’s representative to Miss Earth 2011 in Manila, Philippines on December 3.

Miss Earth 2011 moves back to Manila

In view of the worsening flood situation Bangkok, Thailand is experiencing, Carousel Productions, Inc. (Carousel) has decided to transfer the venue of Miss Earth 2011 from Bangkok, Thailand to Manila, Philippines.

Carousel President Ramon Monzon issued the following statement: "After careful consideration, it is with regret that we have decided to cancel the scheduled Miss Earth 2011 in Bangkok, Thailand and transfer the event to Manila, Philippines even at this late stage. I believe it would have been insensitive and even irresponsible to go ahead with the event in Bangkok at this time considering the calamity that has befallen Bangkok. We informed our Thai Licensee, PD Creations, of this decision and they agreed and accepted the same. We are presently discussing their request to host Miss Earth in 2012 or 2013 in lieu of this year."

The flooding that has inundated the cities surrounding Bangkok and which is on the verge of overflowing to Thailand's capital is the worst that the country has experienced in the past 50 years. More than 400 lives have been lost and millions of people have been displaced from their work and homes as a result of this calamity.

Though Carousel is left with less than a month to organize the logistics for hosting the expected 90 candidates in Manila, it never considered the possibility or option of postponing the pageant. With the different natural calamities that have befallen Thailand, Turkey and other parts of the world, more than ever this is the best time to stage Miss Earth to call attention to the pressing environmental problems the world faces.

"Miss Earth 2011 will in fact become more meaningful at this time," said Lorraine Schuck, Carousel Executive Vice-President. "Through the Miss Earth Foundation, we will have more activities that will increase awareness on the worldwide impact of climate change. The situation in Thailand is an example of what can happen if we do not take the necessary measures to save the environment."

The 90 or so candidates are expected to arrive in Manila beginning November 17 together with the reigning Miss Earth, Nicole Faria of India. Coronation Night will be on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at the University of the Philippines Theatre in Diliman, Quezon City. The show will be aired live by Star World at 8:00 p.m. while ABS-CBN Channel 2 will air it nationwide on Sunday, December 4 at 10:30 p.m. There will also be a delayed telecast of the show on The Filipino Channel and on the television stations of some participating countries. The pageant will also be shown on TFC at a later date.

Miss Earth 2010 and her runnersup are going to prove that they live up to their promises on environmental causes from October 7 to 9, as they visit Thailand's flooded areas to lend their support.

Led by Miss Earth Nicole Faria, the beauty queens are in the Kingdom to promote the Miss Earth pageant, which is being in Thailand on December 3 this year. But their most urgent task is to lend a hand to those affected by the nationwide flooding. "We are not experts in solving the problem but we can help by giving mental support and providing food and other physical help," says Faria.

With this year being the International Year of the Forests, Faria says that flooding is certainly her concern. In her interview with The Nation, the beauty queen praised His Majesty the King's idea of planting Vetiver Grass (Ya Faek in Thai) to prevent future flooding.

Faria was accompanied by three runnerups from the Miss Earth pageant in Vietnam last year, namely first runnerup Miss Air Victoria Shchukima from Russia, second runnerup Miss Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon from Thailand and third runnerup Miss Fire Jeidy Bosques. They will go as a group to visit the floodhit areas.

"We don't know the detailed schedule yet but we will be right there. We are not just beautiful faces but beauty for the causes," Faria notes.

Miss Earth 2010 will end her term on December 3 when she crowns her successor at the end of the pageant held at Impact Exhibition Halls at Muang Thong Thani.

This year, Niratcha Tungtisanont will represent Thailand at the Miss Earth 2011 pageant. Niratcha or Grace has been crowned first runnerup at Miss Thailand World and is therefore entitled to enter the contest.

Miss Earth, the environment-themed beauty pageant, comes to Thailand later this year, marking only the second time in its decade-long history that it's been held outside the Philippines, the country of its birth.

Last year, Vietnam won the bid to host the pageant created in 2001 by Carousel Productions to promote environmental awareness.

"Miss Earth is much more than just a beauty pageant, it's also an international environmental campaign," says Wanthanabhadee Jittanukroh, the CEO of the organisers PD Creation, in an interview after the press conference for Miss Earth 2011 at the Kirimaya Resort in Khao Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima.

"We fought hard against China to win the chance to hold the 10th edition of Miss Earth. I think Carousel chose us on the basis of the several activities we have planned to support the contest. These activities will take place in four regions of Thailand: the North, South, the north-east and in Pattaya, each of which shows different aspects of Thailand's environment to the world.

"At first, we worried about the support of the government, especially given the current political situation. But this project is concerned with environmental protection. It's also an international event that will include a tribute to His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 84th birthday anniversary. We usually organise an activity, 'Khon Thai Jai Phakdi', for the King every year and this year, we'll be drawing the attention of people all over the world to his abilities. He is the only royal to have received the International Merit Award, an award for environmental preservation, in recognition of his theory about ya faek (vetiver grass)."

As the licence holder and organiser, PD Creation is investing Bt150 million in the management of Miss Earth 2011, which takes place in Pattaya in November and will see the participation of contestants from more than 80 countries.

The concept for 2011 is "Smile for Earth, for All".

"Our world is crying because we don't take care of it. The world's tears are flooding us. When the world moves, it shakes us up. Thailand is the Land of Smiles, so it's time for us to send smiles to people who are suffering. Our activities will make the world smile again,", Wanthanabhadee explains.

This year, one of the activities is "Reality Earth".

"A big problem in the North is pollution. We'll be taking the contestants up in a helicopter and we want them to behave like reporters, making a live telecast that will be aired in their own countries.

"The contestants will also take an oath to work on environmental conservation wherever they are in the world. That oath will be valid for one year. This is a departure from previous years, which have focused only on four winners: Miss Earth, Miss Earth Air, Miss Earth Water and Miss Earth Fire," says the young CEO. "Our aim is to make Thai people much more aware of the environment."

Last year, singer Ronan Keating was the special guest of Miss Earth 2010 in Vietnam.

Who is PD Creation inviting for the Thailand event?

"All I'm prepared to say right know is that it will be someone who is very important. We haven't selected an artist based on his popularity but on what he does," says Wanthanabhadee.

"This year, we will make Miss Earth greater than in previous years and, most importantly, promote the image of Miss Earth, who is also a United Nations Environment Programme ambassador, in taking the environmental campaign to the world."

The 11th Miss Earth pageant will be held on November 12 in Pattaya.

The reigning Miss Earth has a passion for the planet.

Indian model Nicole Faria has devoted her reign as Miss Earth 2010 to environmental causes.

She's called on people to help prevent destruction of the environment - for themselves and the future generations - stressing that the earth can survive without humans but humans cannot survive without a healthy earth.

The 21-year-old native of Bangalore was involved in environmental causes even before joining last year's Miss Earth pageant in Vietnam.

These included promoting ecofriendly fabrics among women in her country.

"I believe in karma. What you give, you get back. You give to Mother Earth and Mother Earth gives back to you," she said.

Chatting with local reporters at the recent press conference at a hotel in Khao Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Faria said that she would continue with her work for the environment even after she passed on the Miss Earth title to this year's winner.

"This is my baby in a cradle and I need to protect it for as long as I live. I will do a lot more than I am doing now, for the rest of my life," she said.

As the Miss Earth titleholder, Faria also is an ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme.

In India, she's began a cleanup campaign for lakes in Bangalore. She won an award in Mumbai for her ecofriendly initiative to save some lakes there.

She's also promoted rainwater harvesting through roof funnel pipes, cycle rickshaws and solar energy, among other projects, to help create a better environment.

Reigning Miss Earth Nicole Faria of India and last year’s other Miss Earth winners flew into the country Tuesday and vowed to help promote government programs aimed at saving and protecting the environment.

“I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about the Philippines and I’m thrilled to be here. It is my pleasure to work with the Miss Earth Foundation, and I am so excited to meet the Filipino people and help protect the natural wonders of such a lovely country,” Faria said, during a press briefing in Pasig City.

Faria is in town together with Miss Earth Water Watsaporn Wattanakoon of Thailand, and Miss Earth Air Victoria Shchukina of Russia. They flew in from Bangkok.

They will make a series of appearances on behalf of the Miss Earth Foundation throughout their stay in the country. “Through these activities, we hope to give our Miss Earth winners a first-hand experience of the projects that we do in our country,” said Miss Earth Foundation executive director Cathy Untalan.

The activities of the beauty queens include paying a courtesy call on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Aug. 1. It will be followed by a visit to SM Supermarket to promote the chain’s “I am Plastic-Free Campaign.” Capping the day will be a stopover at the Tayuman Elementary School in Rizal as part of the foundation’s “I Love My Planet Earth School Tour.”

On Aug. 2, the following day, the beauty queens will focus on coastal clean-up and tree planting at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area.

Fashion has always been part of a beauty queen’s life and the winners, along with the Miss Philippines-Earth past and present title holders, will sashay on the runway in a special fashion show on Aug. 3 at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas, featuring a 36-piece collection of Frederick Policarpio’s creations.

The winners will be off to De La Salle University in Manila on Aug. 4 to participate in a forum dubbed “Fostering Beauty and Responsibility through Environmental Stewardship.”

While the 2010 winners are busy participating in various projects and activities, the preparation for the 11th edition of the Miss Earth coronation night is well under way.

Faria will be turning over her crown on Nov. 12 in Pattaya, Thailand, one of Asia’s largest tourism destinations. International franchise holders of the Miss Earth pageant are already fielding out their representatives for the coming pageant.

“We have received a lot of favorable feedbacks from different franchise organizers,” said Carousel Productions, Inc. executive vice-president Lorraine Schuck. “They are very excited to send their delegates and share their respective environmental advocacies.”

Representing the Philippines is Athena Mae Imperial from the municipality of Casiguran, Aurora. The 24-year-old stunner works as a program researcher for GMA 7. She bested 49 other candidates in the Miss Philippines-Earth pageant held last May.

Aligning with the International Year of the Forests, this year’s staging of the Miss Earth pageant is expected to be a grand showcase of Thailand’s rich culture, tourist spots, and, more importantly, its efforts to save and protect the environment.

The reigning Miss Earth 2010 from India, Nicole Faria has finally arrived in the Philippines on July 23rd all the way from Thailand.

She is expected to stay in the country for two weeks together with Miss Earth - Water 2010 from Thailand (Watsaporn Wattanakoon) and the newly appointed Miss Earth - Air 2010 from Russia (Victoria Schukina).

They will participate in a fashion show, photo shoots, TV guesting, and school visit to talk about the environment.

Besides, if these ladies were the ones to approach you and tell you what to do, I’m pretty sure you’d be all ears and thinking of Mother Nature in no time.

Distinguishing itself from the myriad of other pageants through its environmental advocacy, the Miss Philippines-Earth is the annual search for the special pool of ladies who do not only possess the beauty of face and figure, but could also be ambassadors of the environment.

“Dubbed as ‘Beauties for a Cause,’ they become advocates of Mother Earth as they go around communities and hold seminars to heighten the awareness of the public, and to encourage them to an eco-friendly lifestyle,” explained Cathy Untalan, executive director of the Miss Earth Foundation. “Moreover, they engage themselves into various activities like tree planting and coastal clean ups, which aim to encourage more people to help lessen the problems of the environment.”

On its 11th year, the candidates take on the role of Amazon guardians as the pageant aligns itself with the International Year of the Forests and centers this competition with the promotion of forests conservation.

From 50 candidates, and after a series of grueling eliminations, the names of the final 10 candidates were announced during the talent and cultural costume competitions at Thunderbird Resorts in Binangonan, Rizal.

These 10 ladies survived the four elimination rounds and will again try to impress the panel of judges with their exceptional beauty, grace, intelligence and environmental awareness during the grand coronation night today, June 5, at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum in Palawan.

“I have been observing how each batch of reigning queens strives to bring their respective projects to life since 2006. I must say that I am very impressed with the previous winners and am looking forward to the legacy of this year’s batch,” stated Carousel Productions Inc. executive vice president, Lorraine Schuck. Carousel Productions Inc. founded the Miss Earth Pageant in 2000.

Beasides highly anticipated swimsuit and question and answer portions, the ladies will also compete in a long gown competition donning creations of Sidney Eculla, Gerswin Qua, Arielle Agasang, Robert Zamora, Junji Banat, Pepe Quitco, Joel Acebuche, and other noted designers.

The Miss Philippines-Earth 2011 grand coronation night will be telecast live on ABS-CBN 2 at 10 p.m. tonight.

Despite their hectic schedule the Top 10 finalists visited The Manila Times offices on Tuesday, a couple of days before they flew to Palawan, to discuss their advocacies and share their most memorable experiences as they prepare for the biggest night of their lives.

Miss Cebu City, Murielle Adrienne Orais

Representing the Queen City of the South, Cebu City, the 19-year-old nursing student has been a consistent favorite throughout the competition, especially after winning most of the special awards during the preliminaries.

Raised by a single mother, Orais says she’s been very fortunate to have the support of her paternal relatives for her to be able to attend to a good Catholic school and a very prestigious college. Having survived a recent general surgery, she feels she has been blessed with a second life and plans to make a difference by advocating a low carbon lifestyle.

“One way would be using a bicycle as means of transportation, especially when travelling short distances. This could help in reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere and lead to a much cleaner air.”

Her fellow candidates also point to her as the one most likely to pursue a showbiz career although she asserts she hasn’t received any offers yet.

Miss Malolos City, Mary Denisse Toribio

The reigning Lakambini ng Bulacan 2010, Mary Denisse Toribio is a nursing student and a basketball player at the University of Santo Tomas.

Admitting she was quite the “tomboyish type” and often chose to play with boys when she was a child, she recalled the many cuts and bruises as proof of her repeated attempts at learning how to ride the bicycle. This, she said first taught her that with enough perseverance and determination nothing is impossible.

She describes life as a book—as one chapter ends, a new chapter begins. “People come and go leaving lessons that we can use for the rest of our lives. When my dad died because of cancer, it was the time I learned the true meaning of the word ‘independence.’ Because of him I grew up as a girl with a strong personality,” she narrated.

A member of one of the influential families in the province, she says she’s been wooed into entering politics before, but prefers to stay in the background, taking care of guests and just helping out during campaigns. She enjoys dealing with different kinds of people from all walks of life, which has made her a lot more confident in pursuing her goals.

She believes in the promotion of ecological solid waste management as the best way to solve our garbage problems. “Incineration is not only harmful to our health but also to our environment.”

Miss Cotabato City, Edan Dafilmoto

A registered nurse and current medical student, Miss Cotabato says she had a childhood full of laughter and adventure, which could explain why she is one of the most cheerful candidates this year.

“I can still remember the scent of the rice field in our farm, the vividness of the small hills and green meadows where we used to play,” she recalled.

As she grew up, she realized that life isn’t all about being carefree and that maturity should be accompanied by responsibility. Just like the responsibility each of us has in taking care of the environment.

She thus decided on the advocacy of empowering Filipinos in reducing their carbon footprints through simple and easy measures, such as eating more vegetables and less meat, using less energy, conserving water, keeping vehicles tuned-up and going for organic food.

“Each of us should be able to understand the essence of minimizing the greenhouse gases emission since this would be the ground for global warming, which would initiate climate change. I believe that if we become aware of the consequences of every action we take concerning our environment, then there will be change within us and we will start to make some resolutions,” she explained.

Miss General Santos City, Catrine Rosary Ocampo

The proud representative of General Santos City, Ocampo is a travel management student at the University of Santo Tomas.

Another goal driven beauty, Miss GenSan said she has already thought about making a difference and leaving a legacy even as a young girl.

Growing up, she challenged her talents and gifts by taking up lessons in piano, voice, tennis and ballet. She said this taught her how to deal with people and overcome her insecurities and lack of self-esteem.

A stern advocate of stopping all harmful environmental activities, especially illegal logging, she believes there are enough laws, policies and programs. “All we need is the conviction to implement these laws strictly.

“The worst regret we can have in life is not for the wrong things we did, but for the right things we could have done but we never did. Regret is always at the end, so let us stop all the activities that can harm our environment before it’s too late.”

Miss Mun. Casiguran, Aurora, Athena Mae Imperial

If the competition were based on eloquence and confidence then Miss Casiguran would definitely be in the top spot. The ever outspoken 24-year-old works as a program researcher for one of the country’s biggest networks and hopes to become a news reporter.

Even as a child, she recalls being very goal-oriented. She said while other girls were busy playing with their dolls, she was playing with the elders in the hopes of beating them in their grown up games.

She was also brought up to be disciplined and aware of her surroundings and the environment.

“I was taught that living in a place with a clean surrounding helps you think more clearly and work much better. I was also educated that doing small acts in saving our environment can eventually be a huge influence to other people,” she says.

For Miss Casiguran, the most important issue is global warming. “We are among the contributing factors of global warming but we can be a part of the solution to address this environmental problem. Even small significant acts such as unplugging appliances and switching off lights when they are not in use, not burning fuel, and avoiding excessive emission of carbon dioxide can be of great help in the fight against this critical environmental issue.”

Miss Fil East Coast USA, Brenna Cassandra Gamboa

The only remaining candidate from Filipino communities in the USA, Miss Fil East Coast is a 21-year-old nursing student at Olivarez College-Tagaytay. Her towering height has made her one of the most easily recognizable of the finalists.

Growing up in an above average middle class family in the US, she said she was shocked to see poverty when they first moved back to the Philippines. It became an eye opener for her and made her understand the importance of hard work. “It also gave me the drive to help the world and hopefully make a difference in someone’s life,” she stated.

“Time is very important, despite what age you are, you must realize every day that you are getting older. Responsibility comes in all shapes and sizes. And it comes whether you want it or not. You learn to deal with it and find ways to accept every challenge.”

To save the environment, she believes everyone can help by self-education and by adopting healthy practices.

“It is very important to make people aware of the environmental problems that our world faces. Every action or inaction of any person with regard to her or his surroundings has an effect—be it good, neutral or bad—on the environment. By becoming aware and doing the right action, we choose to be part of the solution. We can lessen pollution by lessening cigarette smoking or just living a healthier lifestyle, never use open fires to dispose of waste, avoid loud noises to prevent noise pollution, recycle, avoid littering and much more. If we took the time to change our unhealthy habits we can maintain the beauty of the earth today as we’d want to see it in the future.”

She also dreams of starting a very interesting anti-smoking project called, “Ikaw Hawak Ang World” or “IHAW” wherein they will plant trees in exchange for all cigarette sticks smoked.

Miss Las Piñas City, Michelle Gavagan

Another strong contender for the crown is Las Piñas City candidate Michelle Gavagan. Born to an Irish-American father and Filipino mother, Michelle is 21 years old and currently a mass communications student at Southville International School.

Despite being a self-confessed daddy’s girl, she learned how to be independent from her father even at such a young age. Her Filipina mother, on the other hand, taught her the importance of valuing your family, which helped her become stronger when her father passed away when she was just 9 years old.

Reforestation is her personal environmental advocacy. “This is the opposite of deforestation,” she explained. “For every tree that is chopped down, a new tree should be planted in its place. To also save our trees, we must reduce, reuse and recycle paper products. The less paper we use, the more trees and forests we can save.

“One other thing I learned from my childhood was that anything is possible, as long as you set your mind to it and you work hard to reach your goals so I believe there is still much hope in saving our forests.”

Miss Puerto Princesa City, Jonavi Raisa Quiray

Hometown favorite, Jonavi Quiray of Puerto Princesa City used to be a cartoonist for their school paper and her love for the visual arts led to her taking architecture in college.

Growing up in a family who regularly held their gatherings outdoors made her appreciate the beauty of nature at a young age. It also became a very important part of her spirituality. “I was taught to hold on to what is good even if it’s a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it’s a tree that stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it’s a long way from here. Hold on to your faith, even if it’s easier to let go. Hold on to God’s hand.

“As the representative of Puerto Princesa—the ‘City in a Forest’ my vision is to be a role model of sustainable development. It has been our dream to harmoniously co-exist with the other members of our ecosystem and to preserve its natural state, especially the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. I am advocating the protection of the environment and rehabilitation of what has been destroyed by planting more trees for the benefit of our future generations.”

Miss Pagadian City, Ma. Alicia Elena Ariosa

This 23-year-old registered nurse admits to being fascinated by beauty pageants and all the glamour that goes with it since she was a young girl. After winning the title of Miss Pagadian City a few years back, she is ready to take a bigger and bolder step in the pageant scene.

She recalls growing up with a lot of bittersweet memories, but says she has learned that no matter what has happened, you should not let obstacles or misfortunes become a hindrance to your dreams.

Her advocacy is all about forest preservation and increasing the environmental awareness of the people through education and actual implementation of solutions like tree planting.

“Our environment is the greatest gift that God has given us. The air that we breathe, the water that we drink, the food that we eat and the fertile land that we stand on are all integral parts of our environment,” she explained.

Miss Makati City, Tarhata Clio Shari Rico

This tourism graduate of UP- Diliman grew up with responsibility deeply rooted in her values. Being the eldest in a brood of three she said she got frequent advice from her mother, which made her more conscious of her decisions.

“I have learned that one should always be thinking ahead, and be aware of the consequences of our decisions. Our future depends on all the choices and actions that we make; thus, we must always have a plan.”

Living in the most urbanized city in the country, her advocacy is to promote the construction of “green buildings.”

“By using environmentally responsible and resource-efficient materials in building establishments, we can minimize the use of energy sources and decrease environmental pollution,” she explained.

Carousel Productions, Inc. (CPI), the pageant's organizer, presented this year's delegates to the press at the Resorts World Manila on Tuesday, April 26.

The coronation night of Miss Philippines-Earth 2011 will be held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on June 5. ABS-CBN will broadcast the event.

Fifty candidates from all over the country vie for the title of Miss Philippines-Earth 2011, who will represent the country in the Miss Earth international beauty pageant in Thailand late this year.

Miss Earth 2011 possibly in Thailand

Is Thailand hosting this year's pageant? Rumors are circulating around that it will possibly host the 2011 pageant.

There isn't any official announcement yet if Thailand is confirmed hosting Miss Earth 2011 pageant.

According to press releases prior to last year's pageant Miss Earth will be held in Vietnam in even number of years within the next 10 years as Carousel Productions signed a contract with the Vietnamese organizers.

It would be great if the pageant will go to Thailand this year as it is boring if it stays in Vietnam. Miss Earth fanatics will agree on this. Thailand is also a beautiful country and has a lot to show to the world.

The last time Thailand hosted a grand slam pageant was in 2005 for the Miss Universe pageant.

Hopefully we'll get an official announcement soon from ME Organization to give light on this matter.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Garbage is a growing problem for today's society. Each year we recycle more, but we also create more garbage. It is a problem we all help to create, but we can all play a part in reducing the mountain of garbage.

With a little more thought, we can all change our habits so that each one of us throws out less garbage. These small, but worthwhile changes may at first seem inconvenient, but soon they will become second nature.

Some of the key benefits of minimising waste are:

1. It conserves valuable resources including:

Minerals – used to make many useful materials (e.g. bauxite is used to make aluminium).

Energy – used in mining, harvesting, manufacturing and transporting.

Native forests – used to make some types of paper and other wood products.

Petroleum – used to make plastics.

Landfill sites – the life of existing sites is extended.

2. It saves money. Cutting waste can save money in many different ways:

If you waste less, you get more out of what you buy and waste disposal costs are reduced.

Businesses become more efficient.

Household incomes stretch further.

3. It reduces the impact on the environment.

Fewer areas need to be affected by resource extraction (e.g. mining), harvesting or solid waste disposal.

Less fossil fuel needs to be burnt for energy, thus reducing the release of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

The 3Rs

The 3Rs are a simple guide to help each of us minimise waste at work, school and home. Combine the 3Rs with composting and we have a neat package to help us deal with our waste. In minimising waste, remember to first 'reduce', then 'reuse', and finally 'recycle' or 'compost' what is left.

Reduce

Reduce simply means living more carefully so that you have less rubbish to get rid of later on. This could mean:

Shopping more carefully by looking for products with minimal packaging.

Making foods at home instead of buying takeaways or convenience foods.

Making gifts and cards for family and friends, rather than buying them.

Growing your own vegetables and flowers.

Maintaining and repairing clothes, toys, tools and appliances rather than replacing them with new ones.

Looking after items so they last a long time.

Using disposables carefully so that you do not waste them.

Hiring, sharing and borrowing things rather than buying new ones where possible.

When shopping, try the following ideas to help reduce unwanted garbage:

Take a bag, basket or box with you when you shop.

Use a shopping list. Try not to buy things on impulse. Buy only what you really need.

Avoid goods that have excessive packaging.

Choose products that come in concentrated form (e.g. kitchen detergent) or that have refills (e.g. certain ballpoint pens, some laundry detergents).

When you buy packaged goods, choose packaging that is either made from recycled materials or that can be refilled, reused or recycled.

Buy products made from recycled materials (e.g. paper, compost bins).

Buy products that are durable and will last you a long time.

Buy products that will not go out of fashion quickly and that can be repaired.

Buy fresh foods where possible and compost the scraps.

If possible, buy some food from bulk stores or markets. Take your own bags to be refilled.

Where there is a range of sizes available, choose the largest that you can use.

Reuse

Reusing means to use the same item more than once, preferably many times, rather than disposing of it after one use. Reusing saves the energy and resources that would have been used to make a new product and means that the product does not go in the bin and end up in landfill.

There are lots of ways that you can reuse things around the home. Here are a few ideas:

Reuse empty glass jars for jams and sauces.

Take a basket or cloth bag with you when shopping.

Hire, share or borrow items you do not use very often.

Open envelopes carefully so that they can be reused.

Use small, empty plastic soft drink bottles as drink bottles for school or outings.

Buy second-hand books for school and pleasure.

If you have too much junk around the house, arrange a garage sale and allow others to reuse your junk.

Save your old margarine and icecream containers and egg cartons and donate them to a school or preschool.

Buy reusable items rather than disposable ones (e.g. cloth hankies instead of paper tissues and rechargeable batteries instead of one-use batteries).

Recycle

Recycling means to return a waste product to a factory where it is remade into either the same product or something different. For example, used aluminium cans can be recycled back into either new drink cans or engine blocks for new vehicles. Recycling saves landfill space and also rescues the resources that were used to make the product in the first place. In some cases, recycling can also save energy.

Materials that can be collected from most homes for recycling include:

Paper and cardboard

All glass bottles and jars

Aluminium cans and foil

PET plastic soft drink bottles and fruit juice bottles (Code 1 – PET)

Plastic milk, cream and juice bottles (Code 2 – HDPE)

Steel cans

Milk and juice cartons

Some councils also collect plastic juice bottles with Code 3 – Vinyl.

There is some variation from council to council in the materials collected for recycling. Check with your local council for details about which materials are collected for recycling in your area.

You should only place out for kerbside collection those materials that are collected by your council. If the wrong materials are placed out, the recyclables may become contaminated. Contamination threatens viability of the kerbside recycling system by increasing the costs to the collectors, the recyclers and ultimately the community.

Many more items can be recycled including:

Plastic supermarket bags (collected at some supermarkets)

Laser cartridges and ribbons

Wine bottle corks

Car parts (car bodies, batteries, tyres and motor oil)

Building materials (timber, concrete, and bricks)

Metals (lead, steel, copper and brass)

Fire extinguishers (yellow, halon type).
